What is stomach botox?

Botulinum toxin (botox) application to the stomach is a relatively new weight loss method based on injecting Botulinum toxin to certain parts of the stomach by endoscopic method. In this method, the contraction of the stomach muscles is limited, the gastric emptying time is delayed and the patient’s appetite is lost.

Who is Stomach Botox suitable for?

Stomach Botox can actually be applied to anyone who wants to lose weight. This procedure is not an operation. However, patient selection is important. It should be said that stomach botox will not be very beneficial in patients with a body mass index over 40 and who can be successful with surgery. At this point, patients who are overweight but not obese enough to be operated on and who want to lose weight constitute the ideal patient group. In patients with stomach ulcer or gasrit, first of all, gastric botox can be applied after appropriate treatment of these diseases.

Are there any side effects of stomach botox?

Botox is mainly used to reduce wrinkles on the skin and has no dangerous side effects. Since stomach botox application is a standard endoscopic procedure, there is no significant side effect reported in the literature. The procedure is not suitable for people with muscle disease and allergies to botox.

Is stomach botox guaranteed to lose weight?

There is no guarantee of weight loss in any method, including stomach botox. It is not right to treat stomach botox as a miraculous cure. Although it is known that stomach botox has an appetite-reducing effect and helps diet, it is also possible to fail in patients fed with high carbohydrates after botox application.

How long is the stomach botox procedure, is it necessary to stay in the hospital?

Stomach botox is not an operation. It is a procedure performed by entering through the mouth completely endoscopically. There is no incision. The process takes an average of 20 minutes. Patients are put to sleep in the company of an anesthesiologist during the procedure. It is not necessary to stay in the hospital. After the procedure, 1-2 hours of observation is usually sufficient.

Does stomach botox cause permanent damage to the stomach?

It is known that the entire effect of the drug used in stomach botox disappears from the body within 4-6 months. Therefore, it is not likely to cause permanent damage.

My intestines are already lazy, will I have more bloating with Botox?

Stomach botox is applied only to the smooth muscles of the stomach, it has no effect on the nerve cells and the movement of the intestines. Therefore, it does not have an effect on increasing intestinal laziness. In the diet that will be prepared for you after stomach botox (please indicate this to your dietician), an improvement in intestinal laziness can also be seen with the addition of foods intended for intestines to work.

Does Botox spread to my body?

In the studies performed, no systemic spread was shown after stomach botox procedure and it was observed that it completely blocks the nerve conduction locally and thus delayed hunger.

Can it be applied in pregnant women and breastfeeding women?

There have not been enough studies on its use in pregnant and breastfeeding women.

What is the expectation from Stomach Botox application?

Patients are expected to lose 10-15% of their total weight within 3-6 months. The amount of weight lost; It may differ from person to person according to age, metabolic rate and frequency of exercise.

What should be considered after stomach botox?

Consuming fast foods such as fastfood and consuming acidic beverages are harmful. Botox applied patients get hungry later, are satiated with less portions, and feel full earlier.

How is it different from a gastric balloon?

Gastric balloon is also one of the endoscopic interventions for weight loss. However, the volume of the gastric balloon should be adjusted occasionally according to the patient, which requires endoscopy each time. Stomach botox provides an effective loss of appetite for 3-6 months with a single application. The presence of a foreign body in the stomach balloon rarely causes nausea. In addition, many patients complain that their appetite is suddenly reopened after the gastric balloon is pulled. Since the effect of stomach botox passes slowly, there is no sudden increase in appetite in this way, the appetite gradually returns to normal.
